Are Tatcha creams worth the money?

I mean they come with a gold spoon so there’s that…

So, I’m assuming you’ve heard of Tatcha if you’re reading this post. If you haven’t heard of them, how’s the rock you’re living under? Kinda jealous that you’re doing your own thing so well. Because it’s hard to have never heard of Tatcha, especially the famous Water Cream.

Just look at that packaging!

I’m sure you’re wondering if these moisturizers are worth the hype. Because I doubt many of us have $68 just burning a hole in our pockets (yes, thats how much they cost!)

Honestly, my opinion might be unpopular but I think that The Water Cream is overrated. Yes, it really does feel like water like the name suggests! And like water, it doesn’t do much to your face. I don’t know about you but I like to actually feel like there’s moisturizer on my face. And this cream is so lightweight that it immediately soaks into your skin and feels like nothing is there.

Maybe it’s because I have dry skin though and I like something a little bit more intense. I felt like my skin was still a little too tight-feeling with this product. So my oily-skinned friends – let me know if you completely disagree with me because I feel like The Water Cream is more for you.

The Dewy Skin Cream: it’s The Water Cream’s wealthy cousin. It’s oh so rich and moisturizing. Not to mention that lusciously subtle purple color it receives from Japanese purple rice. I haven’t heard as much hype about this cream but trust me, it’s worth the money.

I have a hard time finding a cream that’s intensely moisturizing but isn’t too thick and just sits on top of my skin clogging my pores. This cream feels heavy enough to feel like you have a rich cream on when first applied, and then soaks into your skin without leaving a residue.

I feel like most of the hype surrounding The Water Cream is because it actually feels like water on your skin. It has a cooling, ultra-lightweight feel on your face – so if you have oily skin and you don’t like having much moisturizer on your face I feel like this product is for you. But for everyone with dry skin I highly recommend The Dewy Cream. It really will leave you with a dewy glow.

Plus you get a nice little gold spoon to apply your product with that you get to keep afterwards and reuse. I’ve never had such a luxurious applicator before and I love it. Maybe its just my bougie soul but it’s probably one of my favorite parts of my routine using Tatcha.

Tan remover . . . does it work??

If you’ve ever used self tanner, you know that it’s amazing. When you aren’t getting in the sun very much but you still want that glow its what you’ve gotta reach for.

But a few days later, it can start looking reallllyyyy rough. Especially if you’ve got dry skin like yours truly and you don’t lotion properly even once. You literally start looking like snakeskin in a not-cute way. That cute tan glow just turns into patchy orange/pale skin that just isn’t okay. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s some images for an example:

So yeah, not cute am I right?

I’m normally really diligent about moisturizing, but I had a day before these photos were taken where I used an awful lotion that didn’t do anything for my skin. And it wrecked my tan.

I did all my normal exfoliating tricks in the shower but they weren’t removing the patches no matter how much I scrubbed! These methods included using a store-bought scrub, a homemade sugar scrub and scrubbing with a washcloth.

A very frustrated Alison went on the hunt on the internet for a way to remove this tan. I came across a few different YouTube videos reviewing tan removers, including this St. Tropez Tan Remover Mousse (not sponsored, just a brand I know of and trust).

The tan remover seemed to really work in YT videos, so I drove over to Ulta and picked up a bottle. My first impression was that the packaging is gorgeous: it has a rainbow-y iridescent look to it that’s hard to capture in photos but trust me it’s beautiful.

The instructions tell you to apply it liberally to your skin and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing it off in the shower. It honestly didn’t smell awful but it also didn’t smell amazing. It had a really clean, chemical sort of smell if that makes sense. I went to town putting it on, putting several pumps of mousse on all my limbs and on my torso. When I rinsed it off, I had to really scrub it with a washcloth but it really worked! (The bottle recommends using a tan remover mitt to scrub it for best results but I didn’t have one on hand and honestly haven’t gotten around to trying one. If you think they’re worth it let me know in the comments, I’m still skeptical for some reason.)

This tan remover really works, just see the photo below for proof! No more patchy skin here 🙂

Here’s a link to purchase this tan remover I used on Amazon, you can also find it pretty much anywhere that sells beauty products (Ulta, Sephora etc.) This is an affiliate link so I’d really appreciate your support in using it! https://amzn.to/2OisRPM

My Top Hair Products

The secret to amazing hair is having an arsenal of products to keep your mane well-kept. I personally have fine curly hair and I live in a dry climate, which means my hair can be fun to deal with. In order to keep frizz and breakage away I have to take some special precautions, and I feel like I’ve come pretty far in the last year towards perfecting my routine. So I thought I’d share some of my favorite products and my top hair care tip.

My biggest piece of hair advice: Wash your hair less often. Once or twice a week.

This is a really hard piece of advice to follow if you’ve always washed your hair every day/every other day, but trust me when I say this has made a HUGE difference in the quality of my hair. It’s so much smoother and healthier now that I let it be more often. When you wash your hair less often you let your hair’s natural oils work their magic, so stop thinking of oily roots as “greasy”! Another huge bonus of washing your hair less often is spending less time in the shower.

Additionally, your hair is usually easier to style once it’s a little dirty – ever heard of the term “second-day hair”? Your hair has a lot more grip to it and tends to hold styles better. If you’re going for a slicked-back style, having slightly oily hair means less frizz and less styling products needed to smooth and hold down flyaways.

You also save SO MUCH TIME washing your hair less often. Seriously guys, this has been a huge difference for me. Especially if you blow-dry your hair every time it gets wet.

This leads me to my first product – dry shampoo. When those “greasy” roots start to bother you, dry shampoo is your best friend. It’s also one of the best ways to add volume to your hair!

Batiste Dry Shampoo is my all-time favorite dry shampoo, primarily because of the price point. You can get it for under $10, which makes such a difference when you go through tons of it like I do. Other brands are usually $20+, and none that I’ve tried before work any better than Batiste.

You probably already know how to use it, but I’ll give a tip just incase. Spray it on from a distance (6-8″), otherwise you’ll end up with white roots as the product will be too concentrated. This is especially important to be careful of when you have dark hair like I do.

You can buy Batiste Dry Shampoo here.

This next product is one of my daily styling products – evo hair’s happy campers wearable treatment. It has so many purposes/benefits that I’ll probably forget to list one here. It’s “a lightweight daily styling treatment that moisturizes, strengthens and protects, while adding style support” according to evo’s website. So basically it does everything. I use it primarily as a leave-in conditioner, but I also love how it adds some texture to freshly washed hair. It also has heat/uv protection which is always a plus, and also smells AMAZING. Basically, this is a product that definitely lives up to its name and makes you one happy camper.

I apply it like a cream, spraying 2-3 pumps into my hands before working it into half of my hair, then repeat on the other side. I should note here that I have rather dry, damaged hair, so I need to use a lot. If your hair is healthy, this amount might be overkill for you.

This product isn’t at too many salons that I’ve seen, so I’ll put a link to purchase here.

Next up in my daily product regime is Living proof’s Restore Perfecting Spray. I use this mainly as a detangler. All my curly, fine-haired friends know the struggle of how matted your hair can get if you leave it completely natural. This product combined with the evo leave-in conditioner makes my hair unbelievably soft and smooth. Not to mention that it smells amazing!

It also contains Living proof’s patented Healthy Hair Molecule. It “repels dirt, resists humidity, polishes and protects hair strands, smooths without weighing hair down and therefore creates visibly healthier hair over time” according to their website. Talk about a multitasking molecule.

I add it to my hair just like I add happy campers, spraying to my hands before applying to my hair. I apply this product generously, as my hair is fairly damaged and I need all the conditioning/repair/protection help that I can get.

Up next is my every day holy grail tool – my Wet Brush. If you listen to any of my product recommendations, please, please get this brush!

Remember how I said that I have a good amount of damage? Well it’s not from heat styling like most people’s damage. I only just started consistently blow drying my hair about 2 months ago. My damage is from improperly brushing my hair.

I used to hurriedly run a normal brush through my hair, not caring at all about the ripping noise it would make as I started from the top of my hair. I knew you were supposed to brush from the bottom up, but I lacked the patience to correctly take care of my hair. On top of it, I started ripping out knots with my fingers – which is a recipe for extreme breakage.

I was starting to notice the damage on my own, and then I went to a salon for a routine trim. The stylist pointed out my breakage to me and asked if I knew why I had it. Didn’t take me long to realize that the only thing I had started to do differently was pick at my hair more with my fingers.

I got this brush the next day after hearing so many good things about it, and let me tell you it glides through your hair like no other brush. I use it for everything – wet or dry hair, and I use it when blow-drying my hair as well.

The bristles are extremely fine and have some give to them, so that they don’t break your hair as you brush. Wet Brush is well worth the hype, and is honestly my favorite brush I have ever used. You can purchase it here.

If you listen to any of my product recommendations, please, please get this brush . . . it glides through your hair like no other brush.

If you haven’t heard of Olaplex yet, you’re about to get a mini-education on why this is such a game changer. This is the only product that I’ve heard of that actually repairs your hair. Olaplex has a patented chemical that works on a molecular level to repair and strengthen your hair. Learn more here.

I’m sure you’ve seen Olaplex on your local salon’s menu and wondered if it actually works. Well I’m here to tell you that it does. Every time I use Olaplex I can’t help but say “wow” after I shower it off, as my hair feels so much stronger and healthier.

You use this treatment before you shampoo your hair. I wet my hair in the sink and then apply it generously from root to tip, really focusing on the bottom third of my hair where most of the damage is. I then put my hair in a bun and try to leave it a little longer than the recommended 10 minutes to let it really work, usually around 30 minutes. I then hop in the shower and wash my hair as normal.

Here’s a link to purchase.

The final product in this review is Living Proof’s Flex Hairspray. I’ve used a lot of different hairsprays in my life, and this is one of my all-time favorites.

It smells divine – think a citrusy-vanilla sweet fragrance. Every time I go around my fiancé wearing this he tells me how good I smell. He never does that for my perfumes but he always does for this hairspray.

It also works really well to keep your hair in place. Not quite as much grip as a pomade but a few steps below that. Bonus part is that you can use it while your hair is wet to set your hair before you style. I don’t think I’ve heard of another hairspray with this ability. It also has heat protection and is color-safe.

You can purchase this hairspray here.

I hope you enjoyed this discussion. Let me know in the comments your experience with these products, or if you try them!
